Joya de Cerén is located in the central area of the country, within the Zapotitán Valley, 36 km northwest of the city of San Salvador and about 6 km south of the Municipality of San Juan Opico, Department of La Libertad.
This important archaeological site, so far, is the only World Heritage Site declared by UNESCO on December 11, 1993. This site shows the daily life of a village from the Late Classic Period that was buried by the eruption of the Loma Caldera Volcano, approximately for 650 AD
Due to this natural event, the archaeological remains of the site are intact and in good condition. Because of this situation, it is also known as the Pompeii of America.
In addition, it is one of the 5 Archaeological Parks managed by the Ministry of Culture. It has approximately 5 hectares of land distributed in 2 large operating spaces: The archaeological reserve area and the administrative area: cafeteria, free guide service, technical and public use area (Archaeological Park).
