The San Fernando de Omoa Fortress is a colonial construction of importance as a defense of Spanish trade in the second half of the 18th century.
In the architectural aspect, the Omoa Fortress is an innovation in military design, the classic four-bulwark castle of proven strategic excellence was set aside to make way for a controversial design but one that presented a clear economic advantage: a triangular layout .
The San Fernando de Omoa Fortress, being a building of historical and anthropological value, is declared a National Monument according to Executive Agreement No. 170 of March 20, 1987. This declaration includes, in addition to the colonial constructions of La Loma, the House of the Command, the El Real Campus, the Fortress Cemetery and the Milla Tres Kilns, the natural environment such as: the Centeno Lagoon and all the mangroves.
