Fortified City of San Francisco de Campeche

San Francisco de Campeche was founded in 1540 by Francisco de Montejo el Mozo as a new access to the Yucatan Peninsula and soon became the target of repeated pirate attacks.

Today the defenses built to repel such acts can be toured for the admiration of visitors as it is the only fortified city in Mexico and a World Cultural Heritage Site.
