Mexico experienced an increase of 18% in the number of international tourists visiting the country in February 2023 compared to the same month the previous year, according to the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (INEGI). The country received 3.09 million foreign tourists in February 2023 compared to 2.62 million in February 2022.
Foreign exchange earnings from international visitors also increased by almost 21% in February 2023 compared to the previous year, reaching $2.4 billion. The number of tourists who arrived in Mexico by land increased by 29.7% in February 2023, exceeding 250,000 people. For their part, arrivals by plane increased by 16.5%, totaling more than 1.85 million visitors.
Average spending per tourist also grew by 2.3% to $781.62 in February 2023 compared to $763.96 in February 2022. Mexico experienced an upward trend in tourism in 2022, with 38.3 million international tourists visiting the country , an increase of 20.3% compared to the previous year. Foreign exchange earnings from international visitors also increased by more than 42% in 2022 compared to 2021, totaling $26,346.9 million.
Before the COVID-19 pandemic, Mexico was one of the 10 most visited countries in the world, with more than 45 million international tourists visiting in 2019. Tourism accounted for 8.6% of the country's GDP in that year. However, the pandemic caused a drop in tourism, with Mexico closing 2021 with a tourism GDP of 7.1%. The government estimates that tourism GDP increased to 8.3% in 2022.
In 2020, Mexico was the third most visited country in the world due to flexible health measures in tourist areas amid the pandemic. However, this was a temporary phenomenon and the country aims to continue attracting tourists in the post-pandemic era.
