Petenes

The Los Petenes Biosphere Reserve forms a corridor of coastal wetlands of almost 300,000 hectares that draws an exuberant vegetal tapestry of islands and islets where the mangrove reigns.

Red, white and black mangroves create a unique ecosystem in Mexico, of great ecological value for its diversity of flora and fauna.

The soil properties also allow the formation of cenotes and crystalline water springs, known as hidden waterholes in the mangrove forests, which can be explored in kayaks.

Fresh water mixing with sea water creates brackish waters of great importance for species such as tarpon, ideal for sport fishing.
