Snail<\/strong>\u00a0It is the largest site in Belize and one of the most extensive in the entire Mayan Area, since its constructions and living area have similar proportions to the great classical centers such as Tikal and Calakmul, since it includes more than 1,000 structures grouped into 128 groups.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Its natural environment is protected as a National Park, which in turn is part of the Chiquibul Forest Reserve. The settlement of Caracol, whose original name was Ox Witz' (three mountains), is characterized by a system of nine roads or sacbeob that connects the central area with several medium-sized groups, such as Cahal Pichik, Ceiba, Conchita, Retiro, Ramonal and La Rejolla.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A system of terraces is distributed throughout its surroundings, and its use was residential and agricultural. The Caracol ceremonial center contains four main groups of structures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Group A shows a \u201cGroup E\u201d type arrangement, which originally could have been used for observing the sunrise on solstices and equinoxes. It also includes Stela 22 which has the longest text in all of Belize. To the south is a ball court and the South Acropolis. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Central Acropolis is located in front of Group B, the most monumental complex, since it contains the Caana Structure, which is the largest on the site and in the entire Belizean territory. It rises 42 m and at its top you can see funerary enclosures which are accessed by stairs. In front of Caana is Structure B5, decorated with stucco masks, as well as another ball court.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Caracol Site Museum<\/strong>\u00a0It has a small exhibition that includes a model, as well as some sculptures, vessels and other artifacts recovered from some tombs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
