It is located in a valley between the Lempa and Acelhuate rivers, at the foot of the Guazapa Volcano. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Its location in this place is directly related to the landscape of the area, since the relief of the volcano recalls a female silhouette, which is why in the Nahuatl language, Cihuatlan means &quot;Place of Women.&quot; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Its occupation has been dated to the Early Postclassic period, and it was abandoned after being burned. The center of the Cihuatan site is physically defined by a wall that surrounds it and inside is the Main Plaza and the Acropolis. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The plaza, located on the west side, has two I-shaped ball courts, one to the west and one to the north. The latter includes a steam bath at its southern end, probably for ritual purification before the game.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Main Pyramid is located on the east side and at 12 m high it is the largest construction on the site. There is also a round building, possibly dedicated to Ehecatl, god of the wind, as well as small ceremonial platforms such as Structure P-12, located north of the West Ball Court. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To the east of the square is the Acropolis, which housed the Palace of the Lords of Cihuatan and other residential and administrative buildings. Excavations have revealed decorations in the shape of a battlement and with biznaga effigies, which are clear influences from the Central Highlands of Mexico. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite having extensive archaeological investigations, it has not yet been established whether this site was inhabited by groups strongly influenced by elements from the Mexican Highlands or by migrants from the Mexican Highlands (Pipiles), so this issue is still pending definition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>It was almost time for the sun, the moon and the stars to appear over the Creators and Formators.<\/p>\n<cite>Popol Vuh<\/cite><\/blockquote>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In the plain north of El Salvador is the archaeological site of Cihuatan, which is the largest in the country.
